Shot Peening Machines

What is a Shot Peening Machine and What Does It Do?

Shot peening is a cold working surface hardening method applied to increase the durability of metal surfaces and extend their fatigue life. In this process, small steel, ceramic, or glass beads are propelled at high speed onto the surface, creating micro-level plastic deformations. These deformations generate permanent compressive stresses on the surface, preventing crack formation and enhancing the material’s fatigue resistance.

How Does It Work?

The shot peening process is carried out by propelling beads onto the surface in a controlled manner. This can be done using air pressure nozzles or centrifugal turbines. Parameters such as impact velocity, angle, and intensity of the beads are precisely controlled to achieve the desired surface hardness and stress profile. The type and size of beads used are selected according to the material properties of the part being processed and the application requirements.

Areas of Use and Suitable Part Types

Shot peening is widely used in the aerospace, automotive, energy, and defense industries. Aircraft components, automobile engines, suspension systems, gears, and other mechanical parts gain increased durability and longer service life under demanding operating conditions thanks to shot peening applications.
